I am looking to buy 2 indoor and 2 outdoor cameras. Main purpose is to be able to see what is going on in the home when I out and trigger some automation based on movement.
My main question is how I can be sure that they will be HA compatible?
If they are onvif enable that means that can be integrated to HA?
For indoors I am thinking to buy these tplink which I have confirmed that can be installed in HA.
For outdoor usage however I cannot find something within my budget .
Again I am thinking to buy these foscam but I am not even sure if they can be integrated to HA.
That’s why I am looking to see if I start to look for onvif enabled cameras I will be ok.
Can someone confirm, or give me a guidance?
I haven’t got any cameras yet so I am totally noob.
ONVIF not need specifically. ONVIF just make the HA setup easy and is simply standard for camera identify itself and capability on network.
You only need a IP(POE, LAN or wifi) camera that output video stream to network. This is pretty much every network cam. I didn’t look close but expect the (2) you suggest will be OK. There is also RasPi with webcam that may be used.
BEWARE of this:
Network cams are generally insecure with few exceptions. Not going into detail but the problem is real and if you can limit their Network access you’ll be better off.
Their apps and software are an even worse mess. Use HA to view if possible
Suggest you Google around about 1 and 2 above. Not to scare you but it’s a thing and ways to reduce/eliminate problem exist but must know them.
Thanks for the tips. I just did a little research and saw what you mean. From what I read the minimum protection would be to change the default passwords and ports. I will try use HA to view as you suggested.
If you’ve got any other security tips or better cameras (in terms of anti hacking technology) please give some examples.
Thanks!
May be more complicated as when device runs it goes out to Internet and may pull software from attacker.
Some large manufacture cam use open source packages that they download but never change website for update or password. They cannot be trusted to go to Internet.
Vlan and block internet and allow them local connect only. Ubiquiti, nest and ring are only camera I trust on internet and they cost too much and not very good for that cost. I use cheap $40 cam but have vlan so not worry.
I use these cams. I mitigate security issues by blocking their access to internet (dhcp server doesn’t provide a gateway address). There’s even a custom component for HA that makes integration easy.
