Question about the new Backup Encryption

I was just thinking about the new backup - I use Google Drive Backup extension and haven’t set up backups in Home Assistant, however, the backups that are created by GDB load into HA and can be restored

Given I’ve not used the main backup option, I have no encryption key

  • do i need to worry that GDB will start encrypting using some key i don’t have?
  • do i need to worry that HA won’t be able to restore GDB backups because they’re not encrypted?
  • can I just sit safely and not worry?!

Thanks

That very much sounds like a question for the author(s) of GDB :open_hands:

You might reach them best over at their githubs

Well, you stored un-encrypted backups (probably with credentials included) on other peoples computer in the past - why would you start to worry now? :speak_no_evil:

That’s simply not true - Google drive is encrypted
I’m not worried about the encryption provided by home assistant, I’m worried whether anything is going to change in my usage of my continued backup solution

And fwiw I don’t think this is specific to GDB - will home assistant be able to restore non encrypted backups?
