Hi folks,
I have recently installed a kitchen range hood. The problem I’m facing is that even at the highest setting, the light output is barely usable for cooking.
The 4 LED modules are rated 3 watts each at 12vdc.
I would like to replace them with a higher powered set of MR16 6.5w bulbs. Unfortunately the hood’s built in LED driver on the main control board isn’t up to snuff and produces a horrible high pitched squeal when driving the new bulbs. (LED bulbs: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07WKLYYTD)
I’ve looked into installing a new driver like the Mean Well LPF-40D-12 which should be able to accept the range hood control board’s PWM output and allow the bulbs to be dimmed with the range hood controls.
But this got me thinking, while I’m doing all this, why not add smart home control? I have plenty of consumer grade smart home stuff but am not sure about what would be required to acheive this.
It seems like pairing the Mean Well with something like a Shelly RGB2 could get me there but I’m not sure how it would all play together.
Here’s what I’d like to achieve:
- Adequately power the the new 4x 6.5w bulbs and allow for dimming.
- Preserve manual control with range hood buttons.
- Allow smart control to override the current range hood control setting
- Allow range hood control to override the current smart control settting
Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all for your time.
