This is my cheap, homemade smart home / security system solution:
On PI I have installed Homeassistant. It is placed on the first floor, in the cabinet where I also have wi-fi router. All is connected to nearby UPS. On the attic I have alarm siren. I planning to drill a hole in the floor to go down to house entry and place there a touchscreen. The touchscreen will be used to control homeassitant / disable the alarm. I will also drill a hole in the ceiling from the first floor to attic to power up siren from UPS. I cant install PI and Touchscreen in one frame, becasue I would also have to move the UPS. I need all to be powered by UPS. No point of having secuirty system if you can switch off by turining off power.
I am also thinking about buying a tablet or google home hub and install on it the homeassistant mobile app. But I think in terms of response time / lags / simplicity it is better to connect a touchscreen directly to PI - just need 2,5-3 meters connection soultion. Have you ever tried to connect touchscreen directly to PI on distance longer than 2 meters?
If you already decided to drill the hole between floors, wouldn’t it be asier to go for integrated with Pi screen, connect the power supply to UPS and draw the power cable between floors? Using HDMI cable won’t fix the problem, as it will only transmit video from Pi to screen, but not touch signals back to Pi. Screens I know use separate ribbon cables for this…
With this setup you can use either WiFi or even Ethernet cable to connect Pi to network…
Cześć Mirek. Dzięki za odpowieź :).
I got feedback on PI forum it is impossibile to connect touchscreen and be able to pass “touch” signal on long distance.
Integrating PI with touchscreen and charge it with the cable from UPS on first floor - this is the last resort scenario. First I will test how standard android tablet / Ipad will work as dashboard for homeassistant.
