I never bothered to learn the details of the backup-restore thing, it worked perfectly. Create a full backup, wait, download it, upload to another HaOS, click restore, wait, done.
Now - well, at best, plenty of stuff is missing. Most importantly, I do not seem to get anything HACS. But plenty of error messages on things I really need - and took all of 2024 to configure. Now everything is working. Well, was - I need a worst-case fallback phyiscal server if the main HA fails. In a remote location. Same problem when restoring an old “full backup” (dec 15, 2024) into the new 2025 OS.
The first errors in the logs would likely hold a clue. After the restore, is there a custom_components folder in config with the integrations you added from hacs? I suspect there is, but there’s just something preventing HA from loading things from it.
Have you tried running the hacs install script after the restore? Any pihole or adguard like solution that might block more than it should?
Thank you for the quick ideas, I seem to be doing something wrong (which is now necessary and never was) - will update as I know more. I am currently in the process of doind everything again - on two machines simultaneously. I have a secondary “backup thinclient” in case that’s needed, and this seems to be a “needed” case.
Another quick thought: is anything restoring right, or nothing? Maybe the new encryption is trying to apply some default key that does not match and it is rejecting the entire backup without proper warnings? Or it is extracting garbage?
Well, it’s not the encyption key. If I enter that wrong It tells me that it’s wrong. But I’ve som far not managed that to essentially result in anything at all. Takes 20+ minutes, results in nothing.
Resoring the pre-encrypted backup results in weird mistakes I’ll screenshor as soon as I’m back there.
But I do wonder why it says “restore partial backup” for all the new backups. Is the option “just backup everything” gone? I did like that.
I have my HA running, backups enabled and emergency_backup_key saved… but after an unsuccessful update core 4.2 the system get back to new installations. And guess what, all backups don’t recognise the stored emergency rescue key!!!
I’m lost form my backups, and will loose a ton of stored data as well!!
the system fails in this way miserably. Having a backup but you can’t access. And why these encryption keys everywhere I’m not a bank, I’m just a person having my home automation up and running.
and yes I do have edited the configuration.yaml with a custom integration that is not yet supported by HACS. Not to blame this one, the backup before the edit does not work either.
