I currently use Nest Protects in my house for smoke/CO detection. They can only be managed by the legacy Nest app, and the Nest/Google SDM API doesn’t expose those devices. One of the devices has failed and the others are getting close to EOL, so I’m looking to replace them all.
What smart smoke/CO devices do others use? Obviously, something that integrates well with HA would be ideal. I’m fine with any protocol (ie z-wave, zigbee/mater, WiFi, etc).
First check the regulatory requirements for wherever you live - what you choose may affect insurance claims.

I went with “dumb” alarms because current regulations here call for interconnected with 10-year sealed batteries. The First Alert model, which I believe is still the only Z-Wave available, has neither of these features.
To make them “smart” I installed the manufacturer’s relay module, which triggers a z-wave sensor to alert me if an alarm has triggered, e.g. while I’m not home. I’m frankly not sure what other “smart” features a smoke alarm needs; it is first and foremost a life-saving device.
I also have an Ecolink Firefighter Z-Wave sensor, which “listens” for a fire alarm sound, a perfect way of again notifying me when my condo’s fire alarms (which I cannot touch) are going off.

These sound interesting - but they don’t seem to be available to the general public (in the UK at least). Is that right?
