Looking for air purifiers that can either be controlled with a smart switch (so the purifier must turn on to the previous setting when receiving power) or have local polling API. And ideally, the filters are either not too expensive or available through a third party. And is available in the US.
The IKEA Fornuftig works the dumb way, and the Starkvind has ZigBee support. But both are fairly weak (Starkvind says it can only handle 215sqft) and IKEA is not known for having long term support of products, so I’m scared they won’t sell the filters in just a few years from now.
I have had a lot of purifiers with cloud support recommended, but I do not want to go that route if I can avoid it. A box fan with filters taped over it works with a smart switch/outlet/plug (whatever you call these) and only cost $30, why should I spend $300 on something that only has cloud support?
I went with the Winix from CostCo. It has one flaw where it sets itself to auto or the lowest speed despite my automation telling it to go full turbo speed. This is a minor issue and it might just be how I wrote my automation. I haven’t been able to fix it or work around it, but it usually goes to turbo when I want it to. And it’s not really a dealbreaker for me. I think I spent <$100 on it. I keep this one in my kitchen.
I also have two IKEA Fornuftigs on basic smart switches above my litter boxes.
It helps to have air quality monitors first, because otherwise you don’t know if a purifier is making a difference. I know mine are, so I’m glad I have them, even if none of them are perfect.
