I’m looking for a thermostat that I can control with home assistant via WiFi or Z-Wave and have had a ecobee3 smart thermostat and liked it but now moved to a new house and looking for something that does not require the cloud to work. I don’t mind having my thermostat connected to the cloud but I would rather not have to rely on their servers, app and, internet to remain functioning to use it with home assistant. My internet is spotty sometimes at the new place.
Is there a smart thermostat that will communicate directly with home assistant without having to connect to the internet?
For most things that you want to bypass the cloud, I’ve found that zigbee is the way to go. Most things zigbee can not only be controlled without the cloud, but they can also be controlled without the proprietary hubs they say they need to work. It’s not foolproof, but if you get a good zigbee dongle, you can pair most zigbee devices and control them directly without anything else.
Something like this for a zigbee controller works out of the box… Does Z-Wave too…
Is there any more feature rich thermostats out there like the ecobee, nest, or the Honeywell WiFi thermostats. I’m really like the extra stuff that I got with the ecobee but I also want to still be able to have it function as a smart thermostat and remotely be able to control via home assistant once the company decides to discontinue support, shuts down servers, or goes out of business.
I just moved to a new house and used a Hubitat to control my Z-Wave network in my old place. But this may be the time to think about switching to ZigBee.
I am looking for the same as @sgibbers17
Would love to use Nest but do not want to rely on cloud API. There are thermostats that have direct network communication interface that is unsafe (yay! = I can integrate without “security theatre” (will be on local network that is not directly routed). One of these is “CT50 V1.94 by Radio Thermostats” but boy - it is so ugly compared to the Nest!
Did anyone try rooting Nest and having it work without Google Cloud services?
I actually went with an ecobee smart thermostat premium. I found out that to work with homekit it has to be work with homekit locally. Home assistant has a homekit controller Integration to allow local control of the ecobee thermostat. I have not personally tested it but from what I have read about it on this forum it is local.
