Any recommendations for commercial ESP based motion sensors that can be reprogrammed with ESPhome and use MQTT? I’m currently working wtih z-wave but they are slow, sometimes taking a couple seconds to update. Not great if you want to control lighting etc. Already using ESPhome/MQTT for a lot of sensors and that combo seems rock solid.
If you are looking for mmWave presence sensors, not PIR, then you can read this guide: https://smarthomescene.com/blog/best-and-worst-presence-sensors-for-home-assistant/
If you are willing to be more hands-on, you can DIY: https://smarthomescene.com/diy/diy-presence-sensor-with-hi-link-ld2410-and-esp32-for-home-assistant/
Never used one of these, but they are well liked. MMwave is the way to go.
I have the Athom presence sensor (PIR and mmWave) which can be tailored via ESPhome (including enabling MQTT if that’s your thing). For $29 it seems like a good value. I also have four z-wave PIR sensors (ZSE18) and find their response time is basically immediate. If you are consistently experiencing multi-second delays you might have a mesh/signal issue worth looking into.
+1 on the Athom one, works very well and combines both PIR and IR which can be useful for some specific detections
It has also light sensor and powered by USB-C port which is quite useful too !
