Recommended Hardware for my setup

Hello everyone,

I am new to HA environment, I am not new to home automation, used RM devices for several years and last two years I went for compleet change to Tuya / Smartlife. I have 24 Tuya devices at the moment but I want to move over to HA with all my devices, I also ordered some new devices and total count of Tuya devices will be around 35. First without flashing them, keeping the cloud connection through Tuya, in later stadium I am planning to flash the devices.

I know this question is asked a lot before, but I want to be sure to get right hardware for my setup, all I want is to see information and use the Tuya devices from a wall mounted device (tablet) and show one video stream when the door bell is ringed. I want to use 3D floor plans on the tablet for 3 floors of my house.

I do have 14 cameras but those are connected on a CCTV box with 2x 8TB HDD’s and it has it’s own dedicated monitor which gets triggered by a movement sensor. Thus I don’t need the cameras streamed on HA, except the front door one which I want to be triggered when the door bell is ringed.

To make the question short, is a Raspberry Pi 4 8GB enough for my needs? Thus only to show 4 temperature sensors and operate around 35 devices through a tablet with 3D floor plans? Or do I really need a NUC?

Most of my Tuya devices are switches, 2 thermostats, curtains, outside sunshade and 3 roller shutters.

The reason I want the Pi is, firstly the costs and second I am pretty familiar with Pi hardware, I use 2 Pi’s to monitor 3 of my 3D printers.

I already finished my 3D plans with Sweet Home 3D, this is the first floor for example:

This is my network setup (updated version for new Tuya devices)

Any comment is appreciated, even if it is critical :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks

I made a decision and went for a second hand Intel NUC5i3RYK with 5th gen i3-5010U processor.

Normally I read a lot before I post things on forums, but with this I was in hurry because of Amazon Prime Day, Pi4 8GB was really cheap for a day or 2, so posted shamelessly without getting enough information  , but while I was waiting I had enough time to read, and wanted a little future proof hardware that’s why I went for a NUC

Received the NUC today, checked the M.2 SSD inside, it is not the original one anymore, it has 64GB M.2 in there, that should be more than enough but when I checked the specs, the write speed was only 150MB/s, it should be plenty for HA but I still order a 120GB M.2 SSD with 320MB/s writing speed, little bit more room wont hurt and the prices are really acceptable.

Meanwhile I didn’t want to wait and practice a little, updated the NUC bios first, and grabbed out the M.2 SSD from NUC and put it in a M.2 to USB Enclosure. Flashed the Hass.io on the M.2 SSD with etcher everything was straight forward from there, installed the M.2 SSD back and after a boot HA got automatically installed on the NUC, didn’t hit any key on the keyboard.

NUC is running HA right now, and it is looking good. I will repeat this tomorrow with the new drive, I don’t need to install anything else on this NUC so I don’t need any dockers, it will be dedicated for HA only.

I might upgrade the RAM too, since there is only a 4GB one in there. That is another easy step if I notice some performance drop after installing everything.

I am looking forward to see how this turns out.

One day delivery failed on the M.2 SSD and it will take another 4 days to arrive…

But I think I made the right decision with the NUC, and it might be little overkill for my usage, I don’t need to upgrade the M.2, if it doesn’t arrive next week I will cancel the order.

I never seen NUC processor go above 8% usage and it idles around 1%, I am still busy with the dashboard, but I also noticed Tuya PIR sensors don’t show, and logs are getting full with “Connection pool is full, discarding connection: px1.tuyaeu.com” error messages.

I really love HA, possibility’s are endless, integration of the Pet Door is really nice.
It is still in progress, I have add a lot more lights and switches, and need new temperature sensors. I also need to fix Tuya thermostat readings (it is known issue) but this is how it looks like now, all floors of our hose is in there:

I am not sure if anyone read these but I thought I should share my experience.
