Recommended host hardware

Hi All,

I’m fairly new to home assistant and looking to do a fair amount with it.

I’m expecting to run home assistant and any thing else to support it such as mqtt, Pihole. Perhaps a few other things. Nothing heavy like plex.

I suspect I’ll be using virtualization and docker containers.

Rather than start with a pi, I figured I could get something a little more powerful.

I am considering a nuc with a quad core Celeron. Does this sound sufficient? Any reason to be cautious of the nuc? I have heard of cooling problems and fans going out. Should I be considering anything else?

Thanks in advance.

The NUC would be an excellent choice – If you have any older laptops or desktops lying around, those would work as well.

You really don’t need too many resources for just Home Assistant. If you start to add Pi Hole, Grafana, Influx DB, and other docker containers you will enjoy the extra resources on the NUC over a Raspberry Pi 3.

although you don’t want to run plex, there’s a lot of support for the synology nas. i’m not very technical but i’ve managed to get everything running (docker, pihole, mariadb/phpmyadmin, mosquitto) with relative ease using these forums or github forums.

This is way more than you need just for HA. As said before, an old laptop would be enough.

But the NUC would be a nice new shiny toy.

Unfortunately, I don’t have an old laptop laying around. I can get the nuc for under $150 and I have ram and HD laying around that I can put in it. At this point for me the nuc is cheaper.

Of all the options I went for using it on a raspberry. Only reason was power, it runs forever on the UPS, on the NAS I could only get about an hour which was allot of times not enough. ( I have the Honeywell Galaxy alarm panel integrated ).

Hi.
I’ve just seen this post about integrating your galaxy alarm.
You couldn’t give me details on how you did it could you?
I can’t DM you as I’ve only just signed up so I could ask you
I’m still in SmartThings but messing around with HA and would like to add my alarm to it.
Cheers
