What outlets do you recommend I purchase for use with HA that do not require an online account or connectivity with the hardware vendor? I’m new to HA and have here a couple “emporia” smart outlets and a “gosuna”. It seems the “gosuna” at least might require that I have a cloud account with their company.
Coming from a Linux/FOSS background, I’d prefer outlets that simply work within my local network only, without creating online accounts nor pinging hardware vendor APIs. Something anonymous and privacy-friendly.
What do you recommend? For now, I just want to try some outlets. Later, I’m interested also in door/window sensors and LED bulbs.
Zigbee based devices are probably the easiest and cover the universe you are looking at. Local WiFi based solutions are around as well based on the Tasmota and espHome firmware in these devices. WiFi has less devices in the battery only universe, such as your door and window sensors. Not that they are not available, just a much smaller set. ZWave is another local only option.
Good hunting!
Two good database for zigbee and wifi for research:
Just an update for those interested in the future.
I ended up buying a four pack of “Sengled Alexa Light Bulbs” for Zigby, a four pack of “ThirdReality Zigbee Smart Plugs” and a “SONOFF Zigbee 3.0 USB Dongle Plus Gateway” and everything works!
It took me awhile to really understand that Zigbee is a local-only protocol separate from Wifi, and that if you want local-only devices, you need ones that say “Zigbee Hub Required” to indicate they can’t (and won’t want to) connect to your Wifi and do cloudstuff.
Already having tons of fun making scenes and automations and things, and ready to get to the next level.
