Because the yellow LED activity on my HA Yellow seems incorrect following a previous recovery procedure, I would like to reinstall the system. Previously I ran into problems when trying to update the Yellow from a CM4 to a CM5. While attempting to restore Yellow using CM4, a restoration of my backup failed with an 'incorrect OS version' message which made no sense. I was able to recover using an image of the SSD made before wiping the SSD in an attempt to update to the CM5. It has been a lot of work copying files to get back to the original configuration but it it is better than 90% restored at this point.
If I go back to the rpi-boot procedure, if that is necessary, I need to be able to recover a backup and I am not convinced that that process actually works. It should work, obviously but recent experience has made me doubtful. Restoring HA-OS to the SSD should create a bootable system. Restoring the backup should then return the system as it was previously. Maybe I'm just delusional.
I replaced my Yellow Box with a Beelink Mini PC last week and I am very happy with the change. The new setup has so far been rock solid. Obviously my HA did exceed the Yellow Box capacity, especially with Zwave and Zigbee.,
This is why people run HAOS on a hypervisor like Proxpox. A while back, I wanted to change the hardware HOAS was running on, basically move it from one PC to another. I think the process required only two mouse clicks in a web browser, and the HAOS image and all the data were moved. Mmayvbe three because I have to select the image, the hardware and then click “start”.
When you have a computer that controls your lights, heating, and door locks you really should think about what if the computer literally catches fire and lets out smoke. Hopefully, your backup is not also on the same computer and hopefully you have some way to replace the computer and be back up and running, that only takes a few minutes.
Someone who is very dependent on automation might even set up an automated failover so the HAOS is moved automatically if there is a hardware problem
