Remote Access via VPN on Router (fritzbox)

Hey there!

I installed HA a couple days/weeks ago and already started to automate some stuff. However, as I just enabled HA to control my shades, i would love to control them remotely from anything, that is not my home.

The ios app works perfectly when i am in the same network. So i created a VPN access on my router (fritzbox) for my phone via wireguard, which works fine as well. I can access different stuff in my network.
Now, when i try to open the HA app, it just shows a blank screen and to be honest: I am too noobie to understand why. For the home assistant it shouldnt make a difference, if it gets opened by the one or the other (right?).

I must be missing something obv here to fail the communication between iphone(vpn) and HA.

I tried to go through the existing threads already, but somehow it didnt work out for me.

Any help is much appreciated!

Are you able to access Home Assistant via browser while being connected to you VPN?

Try with http://homeassistant.local:8123 and also direclty with the IP (for example http://xxx.xxx.xx.xx:8123 β†’ replace with the correct IP of your HA)

I used a ping app to double check if i can reach the device somehow via name/ip.
It successfully pings the IP and the name. So name resolution works fine i guess.

Then update your Mobile App

β†’ Settings β†’ Companion App β†’ Select your HA instance β†’ Internal URL β†’ add your IP:8123 there

Done. works fine. For some reason it wasnt working earlier when i changed it to the IP.

However, it would be nice to understand why it wasnt able to connect to the hostname. Just curious.

Glad to hear it’s working now.

Hard to say why it didn’t work before without knowing details about your network.
