In the last month 3 out of 14 Shelly 2.5 (slightly older than 2 years…) died…
I assume that more will follow.
Shelly offered me a 50% discount on 2PM or 2PM Gen3. But this still would be ~16€ per device. And will this happen again with the new version?
I dont know, do you?
So I am considering to change to another manufacturer?
Do you have any recommendations? Or should i go with the 2PM Gen3? for 16€ each?
Relays have a limited lifetime.
The more current that is used in the circuit the shorter the lifetime.
There might be relays that are better than others, but price on end-product is not always a guarantee that it’s a better relay.
Died in what way? Totally died or just relays don’t turn off load anymore ?
LED lights, especially cheap Chinese ones are a big relay killer… some cheap 10-15W led lamp can destroy 16A relay in a couple of months. That’s not relay’s fault, but bad driver design: each time relay switches on led light a big current surge (can be several tens of A) appears, thus destroying relay’s contacts. Fuses generally hold, since they don’t have such quick-blow characteristics.
I solved a couple of such problems with using SSR instead of classic relay after changing (a good quality) relay a couple of times within one year.
But, real solution is to buy decent led lamps, i guess…
Do you have better alternatives? At least you get certified product with fresh 2years warranty.
Shelly 2.5 is well known for issues and they took it out of market.
They had various problems.
I could no longer reach one Shelly. I was able to reset it, but the web UI was not accessible and therefore not configurable. In addition, after the reset, it could only be controlled via the inputs for a few minutes. After that, nothing worked at all.
Another one could be configured, but then always lost the connection after a short time and could no longer be controlled via the inputs.
The last one was not accessible at all, even after resetting. But it could at least still be controlled via the inputs…
I use the most of them for shutters. Only one for two light circuits (with LED bulbs) because of limited space behinde the switch. This one still works well.
So i maybe should give the 2PM Gen 3 a try.
They also offered me Shelly 2PM with 50% discount, but why should i go with the older version? especially for the same price.
I see… well, i change fw on all my shelly’s at first power-on, i don’t use shelly app at all, currently only on plug plus S, but only because it’s practically impossible to open it unless i damage it. I have esphome on all of them. Currently i have 6 shelly’s 2.5PM for my shutters, after appr. 1 year they still work.
I always open shelly, solder wires to uart and flash it. Honestly, i never tried to do it OTA, although i read that it’s possible. But, i guess that over uart it’s the “foolproof” method. I agree that pins are very small (as mentioned web page says), but i’ve bought proper pins so i don’t have problems.
And i’ve never had gen.3 in my hands yet, only old models. I must go and buy one for science to see how hard it is.
