Replacing Lutron DVCL-153P with WD500Z-1 - Help!

Hi,

Per the subject of this post, I am trying to replace a Lutron DVCL-153P dimmer with the WD500Z-1. It is not going well…

The wiring for the working DVCL-153P and the non-working WD500Z-1 is as follows:

On the left, I assume that the red wire from the DVCL goes to Load-1 and the black wire from the DVCL goes to the neutral side of the load. Certainly, connecting the line wire (with the red tape on it) to the pink Load-2 ‘neutral’ wire turns the lights on fully.

Following the instructions of the WD500Z-1, I have connected the Neutral/Load-2 line and the white wire from the WD500Z-1 to a common neutral (yes, I have capped these), as shown on the right above

Depressingly, the lights do not function. The little green light on the WD500Z does illuminate when the switch is pushed off, but when pushed on, the green light goes off (correctly) but the lights do not come on.

Any clue what I am doing wrong?

Simon

Get yourself a multimeter / continuity tester and a non contact tester and trace the wiring from switch to load. With wires capped you can turn the breaker on and make sure you identify the line. Where wires go behind the walls isn’t always obvious.
