Review: Ecolink GDZW7-ECO Garage Door Controller

In light of the current situation with Chamberlain and MyQ, I was offered the opportunity to try out the Ecolink GDZW7-ECO Z-wave Garage Door Controller.

The package comes with both a tilt sensor and the controller, and it is suitable for either Chamberlain Security+ (1.0 and 2.0) openers as well as the standard “doorbell button” controlled openers.

With the Security+ approach, it acts like a remote “clicker”, connecting wirelessly to the GDO, and once paired, works great (note: it didn’t like my wall-button’s “learn” method – but it paired on the first try when I used the learn button on the actual opener).

If you have an opener that can be triggered with a dry contact switch, there is a wired option as well.

The device looks nice, mounts to the wall, ceiling, or the GDO truss. Because of these mounting options, you could install this without stepping foot on a ladder – it doesn’t need to be next to the opener.

While Z-Wave JS UI didn’t identify the device by name, it works correctly in both the Z-Wave interface and is shown properly in Home Assistant.

It also does the “flashy-blinky” warning that many have come to expect when requesting their controller close the garage door.

As a “tinkerer”, I don’t mind the extra effort that comes with devices like ratgdo, but this was essentially out of the box plug-and-play, with no wiring required. If you can pair a Z-wave device, you can install this in 30-minutes or less.

I’d recommend this device, particularly if you were considering using something like the Linear GD00Z-8 with some form of Security+ emulation.

Awesome, thanks!

I was going to build my own Z-wave garage door opener, but not now.
