RPi4-8GB never uses more that 2GB

I have HA for 3+ years. I use an external SSD driver instead of SD-CARD. I replaced my RPi4-2GB because it was overheating and rebooting. I replaced it with an RPi4-8GB. Working perfectly and a lot cooler… however, I have noticed that HA never exceeds 2 GB… as it gets close to 2GB RAM usage, the CPU utilisation shoots up to 100%. What is going on? Swapping? How can I determine why this is happening. The HA image (from Pi Imager) is recent, from this March 2024, 64bit, Bookworm.

I notice this high utilisation especially during ESPHome firmware updates (I have 34 devices).

Did you do a fresh install, or restored a backup?

fresh install

This is normal, as the processor is doing the compiling. While it definitely uses some RAM, it’s primarily a CPU intensive thing.

Not buying that per se… I should, at least, see times where an 8GB RPI4 exceeds memory usage of 2GB…

I’m just talking about ESPHome compiles, they don’t require much RAM but ALL the CPU cycles.

You may very well have another issue, but during compiling you shouldn’t have much of a jump in RAM usage.

understood. thanks.

I looking at this and seeing absolutely zero problems except you have more ram than necessary at the moment. The cpu pegged and memory spiked about 33% utilized when you ran the compiles but other than that. Nothing to see here. You have some room to run a few addons.

The machine is going to use the ram it needs - if it doesn’t need more it won’t take it. HA with no addons I would expect that profile.

Also a ram or CPU profile mostly used is not a problem either. It just means you’re getting utility out of your money.
