Run a mediaserver on Home Assistant OS

Hi guys, I would like to transform HAOS in media server in order to play videos and photos on TV.

How can I to do it?

Thanks!

If you’re running HAOS. Look in the addons. Pull up the addon store.

Have fun.

Thank you for your reply, but I don’t find anything about mediaserver for videos or photos, I found Music Assistant Server, but is not useful for me. Are there addons alternative store?

Plex is there.

Okay  I didn’t see it

thank you!

EDIT: What do you think about this addon GitHub - mdvorak/ha-addon-jellyfin: Home Assistant add-on for Jellyfin Server ? is it safe?

Hi, welcome to the forum!

I’m using Jellyfin but not on top of HA, aside of it on my server, also as a container.
I don’t want services that have nothing to do with HA to be dependent on it and create potential issues with HA.
Plex is an official community plugin, Jellyfin is not.
Also, compare both of them regarding functionality, update rhythm, license, … to help you decide.

I prefer Jellyfin for many reasons, first of all it’s FOSS. I have a HAOS, so the raspberry pi is totally dedicated to Home Assistant and I can’t install jellyfin as a container. Thank you for your reply, I will take time to decide…

Well, if you are running HA on a RPi, I have my doubts if it will be a good idea to even install a media server on there too…

FYI: installing on top of HA is also done by containers

EDIT: how much RAM does your RPi have?

I have a RPi 5 with 8 GB RAM and at the moment HA used only 700 MB.

A media server on HA would be used occasionally to watch some family videos…

EDIT: How can I install a container of jellyfin on top of HAOS?

There is only 1 way to install that add-on.
With a RPi5 and 8Gb of RAM you should be ok IF you are not using a SD card

I have a Lexar Professional 633x Scheda Micro SD 128GB - XC1, V30, A1, U3. is it enough?

Well, can’t really answer that.

  • The general advice is NOT to use a SD card for HA.
  • The size will surely do for HA and for Jellyfin: it depends whether you put your media on it and how much it is.

In my case it would not be enough for my music, let alone video/picture material.

I find media servers on HAOS annoying, because of the hassle to mount filesystems.
I suggest either looking into another server for your media server and get one with lots of options for extra drivers, so you can expand in the future, or look into a VM setup with something like Proxmox on a NUC/PC, so you can run HAOS on one VM and your media server on another.
