Running with SSD on Raspberry Pi - SSD constantly being accessed

I had been running HA from a memory card on a Raspberry Pi 3, but concerned about wear on the memory card I changed to an SSD.

I’ve observed that the led on the SSD is constantly flickering, suggesting that it is being constantly accessed and I’m now concerned about wear on the SSD!

The HD led on my laptop only occasionally flickers - I guess because data is buffered in ram before writing to the SSD. Is it possible that the flickering denoting SSD access is actually writing to a buffer in the SSD and therefore won’t be causing wear?

Have any SSD users with HA experienced life-limiting wear on their SSDs?

Jim

Yes, the led on the SSD is constantly flickering. Same SSD for three years now.

This is normal, things like recorder saving history etc.

Besides, the LED indicates the SSD is being accessed.
A read operation will light up the LED, but not cause any wear.

I suspected as much. Access on an SD card is invisible and therefore ignored, but on an SSD it’s obvious. As I stated earlier, it may well be that most of the access is to a RAM buffer in the SSD and actual writing to storage is far less often.

Thanks for all the replies. Jim
