S0 Pulse vs RS485 Modbus

For some years I’ve been using energy meters with S0 pulses that I feed through to a home built energy monitoring system and immersion controller. I’m about to upgrade my Consumer Unit and will install DIN mounted energy meters with SO pulse output (likely Rayleigh Instruments RI-D35-100). I am also about to switch from another home automation system to HA. I also might install a battery system.

I noticed that RI-D35-100 has both S0 pulse output and RS485 Modbus and that HA has integration for Modbus.

Question: should I ditch S0 and my home built monitoring system and use HA and ModBus?

My home built monitoring system logs PV, Consumption, Purchase and Export energy every few minutes as well as manage the immersion and send SMS, email and Telegram alerts. I also have a web front end to show the logs and to configure. Planned development includes sending the log data via MQTT to influxDB and Grafana.

Thanks for reading.

If you only need energy, stay with S0. But if you are interested in other parameters like instant power, voltage, power factor etc, you need modbus.
