I have two Samsung TVs: one from 2019 (Q85R) and the other from 2024 (QN90D). Both appeared automatically in HA through autodiscovery. I added them via the Samsung integration. The older one can turn on and off, but the newer model can be turned off but not on!
Some more information:
- I can ping both TVs (including the problematic one) when they are off.
- I tried waking it up using WOL (nothing happens).
- I tried using the media player entity (nothing happens).
- I enabled “Mobile and IP Wake-up” in the Samsung network settings (nothing happens).
- The TV is wakeable through Amazon Alexa APP with SmartThings integration, and the SmartThings app on my phone can also turn it on.
- I removed the integration from HA and reconnected the TV (same problem).
- Both TVs are connected wirelessly. However, I tried connecting the newer model via a wired connection, but it still didn’t turn on.
Any ideas?
ChatGPT has one, not sure if he is right though
A new API was introduced in earlier models (around 2022) but became more prominent in newer models, including the 2024 series. This API differs from the older ones by restricting power-on commands unless they come through SmartThings. The Home Assistant Samsung integration, which worked well with older models (like your Q85R), struggles with newer ones because Samsung removed or limited direct LAN Wake-on-LAN (WOL) functionality in favor of their cloud ecosystem (SmartThings). So, to answer directly:
The eSmart API is not new from 2024, but it’s the standard for 2022+ models, including your 2024 QN90D, which is why the behavior differs from your 2019 Q85R.
