I am trying to set up a custom domain for my Nabu Casa login. In doing so, I get an error message when I want to set the second CNAME (_acme-challenge.). I am using Strato as the domain administrator. It seems that Strato cannot validate this CNAME entry with Home Assistant.
Anyone have experience with this as well?
Hi,
same problem here, also with Strato. Did you found a solution?

Same situation here with loopia.se
I think I found the problem (but no solution yet). Strato does not accept “_” in the subdomain name. Any ideas?
I solved it for me. The trick was to first make a CNAME record for the clean custom domain (e.g. home.domain.com). In the settings of the subdomain I then could enter a CNAME record for _acme-challenge.
These two now validate with Nabu Casa and I can use the new custom domain.
I am having the same issue. I’m using no-ip to manage my domain name. I get an “invalid hostname” when I try to create the “_acme-challenge.homeassistant” CNAME. I had no issues creating the homeassistant CNAME.
Hi James,
Did you check my last post in this topic? Try to create the _acme-challenge part in the settings of your created CNAME record.
First CNAME record can be created with no problem, but I can’t add the second CNAME record.
I am also experiencing this issue with strato.
Once the CNAME for the subdomain is created, strato blocks any other CNAME settings on that subdomain.
The only way to set the _acme-challenge on the subdomain is to add an underscore (_acme-challenge._subdomain) or add it as TXT, which (obviously) both doesn’t work with Nabu Casa.
Anyone figured out a way around that?
Did you try my solutions.
First make a CNAME record for the clean custom domain (e.g. home.domain.com ). In the settings of the subdomain then enter a CNAME record for _acme-challenge.
@DelfuegoNL Do you mind to elaborate on your solution, maybe post some screenshots? I am also having difficulties to set the second CNAME on the subdomain itself.
Hi all,
I tried to take some pictures of my settings on Strato to provide you some insights on my settings and how I made it work. Unfortunately I am not able to find the setting I used. On the Strato service pages for my domain I no longer see an option to edit settings on a configured CName. I wonder if Strato has changed there service pages and no longer facilitates this services. Strange thing is that my subdomain is still working although I can no longer add or edit the second CName.
I was wondering if you still need this acme-challenge CName part because in the Nabu Casa documentation I also can not find any info on that.
Yes, you still need it. It is mentioned in the docs once you start setting up your own domain on you nabucasa account page.
Same problem still on noip.com. They dont accept the underscore as a valid character. Why Nabu need to use special characters is beyond me.
