Does anyone have any experience with the notify_events notification service?
I’d like to use the service for SMS notifications and there is a small fee for that but I feel strange about giving out my CC info to an unverifable overseas company.
I assume since it is an official integration in HA that the company has been vetted properly and we should be able to trust them. Is that a fair assumption?
My view of using my card details online is that it’s not less safe than using it in real life.
But it all depends on how your bank has implemented the security.
In my case I need to use two factor authentication every time I buy online or I need to sign in to my bank and allow non two factor authentication purchases for a short time.
About the company, not this company but any company on the internet where you can purchase anything:
I’m not worried that the actual company is trying to steal my money, unless it’s an obvious fake store.
I’m more worried about a leak of database details.
If I get the option to buy as an one time customer or create an account, I rarely choose create an account.
In some cases I have actually walked out and found the same product at a different place due to the requirement of creating an account and that the feel of the page made me think they didn’t know how to handle my details. Perhaps I was completely wrong, but it just didn’t feel right.
I have seen it far to many times that big companies does blunders that is not OK with personal data.
I don’t think anyone can actually answer your question, and those who can answer is the company themselves.
But perhaps you can get a second card just for internet, or a virtual internet card. Some banks have that.
Or at least voice it to your bank that this is something you want and perhaps some day they will look at your request.
Does telegram do SMS notifications? Or voice calls? If so then it’s something I’ll look into.
I use pushbullet now for regular notifications to myself but it requires that you install the app first which is no big deal for myself.
But I’d like to send SMS notifications to others if necessary without them needing to have an extra dedicated app on their phones for something they’ll rarely use.
As far as the Notify Events company is concerned I’m sure they are fine. It’s probably just me being paranoid. I think I’ve been programmed to get a pucker when dealing with Russian or Chinese companies.
i use it for notification for myself and wife and kids, but e all have the telegram app on our devices
one thing i do like is that you can interact with the bots, one thing i check for is open windows or doors as getting older we sometimes forget and its easier than driving home - but this uses node-red
Twillo maybe another option? They are USA based and have a pay-as-you-go option
This is what I use privacy for; Private, disposable credit/debit card numbers. You hook up a funding source and then you can create virtual cards that can’t be traced back to your original funding source (or even your name or address if you want). On the free plan, you can create up to 12 cards a month. On the pro plan ($10/monthly), you can create 36 cards a month, plus you get 1% cashback. I’ve been using them for almost a year now and use it for everything I do online. Plus, they handle disputes really well (I’ve had to do it a couple of times).
You know what happens when you assume! I personally would not rely on the fact that it’s integrated into HA. As long as the code conforms to the ADA (i.e. proper authentication, follows code norms, doesn’t scrape, etc) anything can be an integration.
That’s why I’m looking into alternatives. I was actually going to use G Pay from google since it’s more like paypal than giving them my card info directly then the site responded with “unable to process payment now. Try again or use a different payment method” and that’s when I decided to move along to something else.
