Seeking fast-reporting indoor thermometers with e-ink display for heater control

Hey everyone,

I’m on the lookout for indoor thermometers that meet the following criteria:

  • Connectivity: Preferably 433MHz, but BLE or Zigbee are also acceptable
  • Display: E-Ink preferred for readability, but LCD is also acceptable
  • Power Source: AAA, AA, or rechargeable batteries (avoiding button cells due to concerns about battery life with frequent reporting and display power requirements)
  • Reporting Interval: Less than every 5 minutes, as I intend to use these devices to control my heaters – once per minute would be great

I’ve been using Aqara temperature and humidity sensors in each room, but their reporting intervals are too slow for effective heater control. I attempted to adjust their reporting intervals in Zigbee2MQTT without success, I assume the devices don’t support custom reporting intervals.

Has anyone come across devices that fit these specifications? Any suggestions or insights would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

It seems to report when it needs and can report about every 5-6 minutes according to my history.

The spike up has one interval that is 4:30.

I don’t know about putting displays in all rooms with the temperature.
I wouldn’t want that. Too much complaining, better to just have it hidden and it’s always “within range”.

Thanks for the suggestion! Based on the graph, it seems to report changes >=0.2°C with a minimum interval of 10–15 minutes (could you zoom into a single hour?). That’s expected for a Zigbee device running on a CR2450 button battery and similar to my Aqara temperature sensors.

While I use a lot of Zigbee devices, I’m now looking into 433MHz and BLE sensors since they seem to have lower power consumption and can report more frequently. I’m tired of poor heating regulation due to slow updates – and of constantly replacing button cells. I wish more devices used AAA batteries instead.

The challenge is finding a device that also has a display. In a few rooms, I find it very convenient to see the room temperature at a glance without opening an app.

EDIT: For example, I want my heating to turn off when a window opens. In my old European building, windows have multiple parts that open separately, requiring multiple contact sensors per window. Instead, I prefer a temperature sensor that reports drops instantly (or at least every 60 seconds) rather than with a multi-minute delay. From my experience with Aqara sensors, their reporting interval decreases once the battery drops below ~80%, sometimes delaying updates by up to 15 minutes.

Did you read what I wrote?

I certainly did, but the graph shows otherwise: In most hours there are only 4 changes, even though the jumps are sometimes more than 0.2°C.

Sure, the graph…
