Sengled zigbee lights become unresponsive after a few hours and require power cycle

Hi folks,

I’m running ZHA with a Sonoff Zigbee 3.0 USB Dongle and have several SONOFF Zigbee S31 switches and two Hue Zigbee bulbs that are all working fine day in and out for a few weeks now.

I recently tried some Sengled Zigbee lights (E12-N14, E11-G13 and E11-N1EA) and after pairing they work fine for a couple of hours and then become completely unresponsive. I’ve tried each independently and the same problem always happens. A power cycle of the light switch resolves the problem but after a few hours same problem again. I have even reset these (power cycle 10 times rapidly) and re-paired to no avail.

Any ideas what’s going on?

I own several Sengleb bulbs (E11-N1EA and E21-N1EA) and had issues with them dropping off as well. I spent months trying to resolve this issue. I invested in many zibgee routers/repeaters to help boost signal, usb extension cables, changing wifi channel for all my AP’s and even changing zigbee channels. What ultimately fixed my issue was moving my zigbee network over to channel 25. For the last several months my zigbee network has been rock solid. Sengled devices seems to be very sensitive to wifi interference (bulbs, door/windows contacts etc).

My first suggestion would be plugging your dongle into a USB extension cable. Having it plugged directly into the computer can cause interference. Second suggestion is to make sure you have enough repeaters to help boost the zigbee network. Third suggestion is to make sure your wireless router/AP and your zigbee network are not on over lapping channels. ZHA defaults to channel 15 which overlaps with channels 1 and 6. See ZigBee and Wi-Fi Coexistence | MetaGeek for more info and wirelss/zigbee channels.

If you still continue to have problems, I suggest moving your zigbee network over to channel 25. This will require repairing all your devices. This can be rather time consuming if you have a large zigbee network so that’s why I suggest this as the last step. If your network is small, you could try this first. I would still strongly recommend using a USB extension cable.

Also, make sure you are using the latest firmware for your dongle.

TL;DR: got it figured out, was another zigbee device that was causing problems for the Sengled lights.

Thanks for the tips. i confirmed the following:

  1. No overlapping channel use of zigbee router vs WIFI.
  2. Confirmed i have a number of repeater devices already (zigbee sockets + lights).
  3. Added an extension cable to the zigbee router.

More testing and still having problems with the Sengled lights going completely unresponsive after a couple of hours. Then something kinda weird happened: one of the zigbee sockets (Sonoff S31) stopped working. Upon further examination the socket evidently had reset itself. Before i re-paired it with the zigbee router the Sengled lights started working consistently without the need for a power cycle after a few days even. So it appears the problem wasn’t the Sengled lights as I had suspected but rather an existing device on the network.

I have since re-paired the zigbee socket and have still had no issues with the Sengled lights.

I’m getting similar behavior from my E12-N1E bulbs. I also have some Sonoff plugs, but I’m not sure how to identify if one device is creating the issues without meticulously going though every zigbee device I have.

I add a few additional Sengled E11-G13s to my Zigbee network, and started having similar issues, especially after I updated my Conbee II to the latest firmware. After downgrading the firmware, the issues still persisted. I continued testing the firmwares, and eventually ended up with the latest again. The odd thing is that now only one Sengled E11-G13 is giving me a hard time, and that one I have been having no issues with for years. On top of that, it is in a 3 bulb fixture, right next to two other E11-G13, that are both working fine. This is starting to drive me crazy.

That one bulb shows the same symptoms as described by billyjoebob999, after a power cycle, it functions normally, and after a few minutes starts acting up. I am already debating if I should get a sengled hub, and hope things will be more stable with that one. But don’t want to split my existing Zigbee network, which already has multiple routers. Also, HA is telling me that the connectivity between the conbee II and all Sengled bulbs is excellent 230+.

This happens to me too. One Sengled bulb in a lamp works and the other doesn’t respond. Or one out of the four BR30 ceiling lights. I’ve moved the network to channel 25 and added some repeaters around the house. It’s helped, but intermittent problems still remain.

I’ve slowly started replacing the Sengled bulbs with various Tuya bulbs. I think it’s silly to assign an IP address to a light bulb, but at least they work.

Yes, all the same problems here. I have 10 E12-N1E in cans in my basement I have been struggling with for 10 months. I have also done everything listed above. When I was running ZHA they were much more stable. I was hoping it was something on my end and not the bulbs. I guess it is time to go back to wifi

The Sengleds don’t fully implement the Zigbee protocol. They don’t act as repeaters. Try adding a Zigbee outlet or some other device and then heal the network. Or add a usb extension cord to move the Zigbee stick farther from the PC to reduce interference.
