Setting up location tracking on Android with OwnTracks and Webooks. I'm not sure it's correct

I followed this tutorial and think I got it right but at the end he says I should see a new file called ‘known_devices.yaml’ in the config folder but I don’t see it. Also the tutorial is a few years old and some things are different (for instance there is no “private HTML” choice there’s just HTML.

I see my location in the HA map although it’s off by a block or so (I don’t understand that). I installed OwnTracks in HA and on my phone, got the host address and pasted it in OwnTracks along with the encryption key but I just don’t have that nice warm feeling it’s done right.

Should I have a “known_devices.yaml” file? Is there a way to confirm it’s been done right?

Many thanks.

I don’t understand one thing. You want your mobile to report your location to ha?
Why don’t you just simply use companion app that can do the same thing? It can track your mobile and report its location to ha.

Yes right. I want to set up some automation based on our presence.

I have the Companion App already installed but I didn’t know it could do the same thing. I thought it wasn’t useful outside my home network.

So why do folks fool with OwnTracks and all the hoops you have to jump through? Heck, I’ll uninstall this stuff right away.

Thanks.

Well yeah it can do the same thing but you have to enable it in sensors. GPS tracking or something like that. Of course you must have remote access to your ha instance.
