Setting up SSL without duckDNS

Hi all,

I’m just getting started with HA so my yaml / rpi knowledge is extremely limited, but i’m looking to setup a secure remote connection to my HA system.

i set it up using duckdns because apparently every video available online in the last 2 years shows how to do it with duckdns ( probably because it free ) and it worked.

but i already own a domain, and so i was hoping i would be able to setup a secure connection my ha to a sub domain. is this possible?

can someone please point me in the direction on how to set it up?

You can use the Let’s Encrypt addon for that

Let’s Encrypt provides 2 ways of challenging ownership.

  1. The HTTP challenge.
  2. The DNS challenge

The http challenge should work always, but it requires a http (port 80) to be open on your side.
I prefer the DNS challenge, as it doesn’t require anything….but….not all dns provider support it

thanks for the quick reply, sadly the domain i have wasn’t on the list of supported providers, but i started a domain transfer to a supported provider so just need to wait until its finished to try it out

I did the same; went to TranIP (it was also a few €’s cheaper ), works like a charm!
Before that I had quite a complex system using apache, certbot and a copy process to generate certificates.

i managed to get it working but i used godaddy dns plugin instead

thanks again for the assist
