Picked up a few of these when they went on sale. Figured it never hurts to have a few extra z-wave plugs laying around, especially around the holidays. After setting a couple up, I cannot recommend them. I don’t see any other posts on here about them, so I figure I should make one to warn people.
The hardware itself seems fine, reasonably small, doesn’t suffer from the problem a lot of z-wave plugs have where they block the outlet above/below them.
The issue is their firmware is terrible. I literally thought I had faulty hardware out of the box because it kept turning off randomly then back on. What’s more, it was sending packets every second, just a constant stream of “last seen changed” messages in my home assistant logs. So I swapped it out with another one, only to have the exact same behavior. I contacted their support about these two issues, they provided me with an unreleased firmware to address the excessive pings, which has reduced but not completely resolved that issue (I still get periodic bursts of pings from the plug, but it isn’t constant at least). The relay turning off then back on at random they are blaming on a bug in the z-wave SDK. They claim they’re working on a firmware with a fix, but I don’t know how much to trust them now considering they were willing to ship a firmware with such a major issue in the first place. I’m debating if I should try to get them to refund my money at this point.
tl;dr - Shelly ships a horribly flawed firmware on the Wave Plug US, and I question their testing practices. Don’t buy them.
