My home has a wired security system which we’ve never used. I’m mostly interested in the door and window sensors. I could get a Konnected device to use these existing sensors - https://konnected.io/
Alternatively, I could simply replace the sensors with zwave devices.
Does anyone have experience using wired sensors? Would you recommend them? Or is zwave the way to go?
This is what I would do if they do, indeed, converge in a central location. Use what you have and make it smart instead of ripping it out and starting over.
If not, then Z-Wave or Zigbee is a good route, I have Fibaro Z-Wave sensors (because they are so small) that have been going for years without a new battery.
You’d be replacing wired sensors with ones that could possibly have wireless network issues and inviting yourself to deal with regular maintenance like battery changes. There’s some great wireless sensors out there, but if you’ve already got wired sensors you should use them unless it’s absolutely necessary to change.
My voice is squarely on use the wired sensors m nothing is faster or more reliable.
My solution was a DSC16xx panel (gives me the sensors and a full security solution) with an EVL4 IP interface (connection to HA). Like konnected you have a discreet security solution that is loosely tied to HA rather than ha driving everything.
Don’t get me wrong, I love ZWave and Zigbee and I’m coming to like ESP solutions in certain scenarios… But panel + evl or Konnected is by far the easiest way to go with wired sensors if you got em.
