Show 'real name' in community profiles

I don’t know how to address the admins or moderator of the community so I will cc some people I think can forward this @balloob @fabaff

At the meta.discourse.org community, the ‘real name’ of each user is shown above his/her post.

This would enable me to address someone by his/hear name (‘Robert’ in my case) instead of the username. And it would allow my to show some more information with my name (in my case I use a country flag to show where I’m from and what my maiden language is: ‘Robert :netherlands::eu:’).

Would you please consider enabling this option/feature in the forum settings?

I quite like this idea.

How do you add the flag(s)?

Just copy and paste emoji, for example through your phone’s browser, or by copy/pasting from https://emojipedia.org

Nice

Home Assistant has a lot of different type of users. A subset of these users use Home Assistant because they care about their privacy. They would not participate in a community if it shows real names.

Even if we not make real names mandatory, if enough people do it it might become a social norms and would scare people away.

So I think that given the community that we are, we should not do this. This won’t stop you from engaging with other people and exchanging names, I just don’t think that it’s a good idea to make the default.

Well, any user already is able to add a name to his/her profile. You can currently only see it in the profile pop up and full profile page. I am only asking for displaying it besides posts.

I believe that people who value their privacy (me included) do not enter any identifiable info already.

I hope you reconsider, in favor of a more engaging community

How’d you get it working, shortcodes an copy/paste aren’t working for me… I still agree with @balloob on this one, don’t want my fill name out there.

You don’t need to:

But if you did, it is possible to show the text above each of your posts, so people can (can, not should or must) see ANY name you provide.

Don’t enter anything (like you already haven’t) if you don’t want it shown.

Go to emojipedia (link above), copy any emotion you see there (NOT the image, but the embedded emoticon in the text) and paste that somewhere into your profile. Easy enough?

I did that but it didn’t show. Maybe my browser doesn’t display it properly.

It’s there:

As @metbril says, you would just not fill in the box. The box is already there and is already optional, this suggestion is just that if people do fill it in, it will show on the posts under/over their forum username.

Just address people by their username. That’s what they want to be their public face, so use that.

So you’re the only Greg on the forums, and if anyone else called Greg joins up they should forever be known as toilet_roll23?

Seems a bit odd. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I don’t know, I’ve played video games my whole life, I’m used to alias’s by now. If it were to pass, I’d just put my username in my name slot, which I’ve already done.

@greg Just pulled this list of users

Stil no final verdict from the forum admins. I am curious if they would consider honoring the request.

cc @robbiet480

@balloob is the highest moderator in the land, I think he made the verdict well known. You can just hover over a username to see the full name anyway.

Ok. I thought he was just expressing his opinion. Too bad this option will not be available, I can live with that, but will need some extra clicks (hover does not work on iPad) to see someone’s name.

Case closed.

The most interesting thing I’ve taken from this thread is that every time somebody has replied to it I got an email.

The email didn’t say @balloob has replied, it says Paulus Schoutsen did. It doesn’t say @metbril replied, it says Robert did.

And yet putting these names on the forum might be bad somehow
