Hello, first post and not sure which category to put this in.
Currently, I have an old mixture of hardware (Vivint, wireless tags, TP-Link Kasa, etc) and am going to be mostly replacing them with Shelly hardware to unify everything (though I may try to connect to some of the Vivint hardware via mqtt or z-wave dongle first).
My main question is regarding climate control in my home. My house uses hot water radiators (old style, no individual control) with a high-efficiency gas boiler so it’s basically an on/off situation. Would it be possible to use this Shelly Temp unit and one of their switches/relays wired into where the old thermostat is to control the heating?
I have Sensibo set up in Home Assistant for my AC units so that’s completed successfully.
Hi!
I’m doing somewhat similar control in my house with a Shelly and have mixed Z-wave too, so I can advise here.
You won’t be able to use the Shelly HT as it’s a little obscure. While the screen updates roughly once a minute, it doesn’t update HA frequently enough for temperature controls and you can’t seem to force it to update HA either. I think it’s an interesting product anyway, but it’s tricky to use for what you need.
I’d recommend another temperature sensor, one which will send updates at a rate of about every 30 seconds. You can do this with a Shelly Plus device and the add-on with a temperature sensor: https://www.shelly.cloud/en/products/shop/shelly-plus-add-on/shelly-plus-add-on-1x-ds18b20
As you plan on using this as a centralised controller, it would need to be located in an area which isn’t near to a rad so that it returns an ambient temperature to HA, which you would then use to control the heating through another Shelly device at the boiler.
Hopefully this helps. Let me know if you have other questions.
That you! That’s exactly the info I was hoping for. So basically my idea was valid but not with that method of temperature detection. That sucks. I liked the idea of the Shelly HT because at least it had a screen to somewhat replace the functionality of the thermostats that is there.
