Was looking for a while for a small form factor device to control lights, blinds etc on home assistant.
After searching around for a cheap device for a while, discovered there are MP3 players based on Android with 4" screens that work pretty well for that process (slow but good enough to run HA app). Paid around $US 35. There are a bunch on Aliexpress etc
I’ve been looking at this kind of stuff for a while, but I’m reluctant to buy one since none of the suppliers confirm that you can install other apps than those already on board.
So: which model is this, exactly? Which Android version? How did you install the HA companion app?

It looks nice but it doesn’t help anyone.
Would you be so kind as to share more details, maybe a non-affiliate link? Otherwise this might be interpreted as spam as there is limited content.
Ok sure, the spec for the one I got is 4" screen, Android 9, 2GB RAM and 16GB storage with slot for card, 1.5GHz processor (MTK6750), 2000 mAh battery.
It came installed with a bunch of music apps (Amazon Music, Deezer, Spotify etc) which I just uninstalled as I only am using it for HA app. Normal Google account signin, Google play pre-installed so could directly install HA client.
Been a week so far for me, working fine and decent battery life.
It’s definitely not a fast device, but responsive enough as a basic HA client. It doesn’t charge with my higher speed USB C, had to find a lower power charger and then it did.
(new to posting here, was trying to not link a specific device but more just let folks know that this was another type of device that was out there in case others like me weren’t aware)
