This guy equipped his smart boat with Home Assistant!
No offense, but the video format isn’t consistent with my style of learning.
But a good discussion about the use of HA on boats would be useful.
My first question would be exactly what problems is HA there to solve? There’s already a fantastic open-source navigation app, OpenCPN, which has a large development community and lots of great add-ons.
For me, among the first things would be monitoring tank levels and bilge pump counters. I’d also love to manage lighting (both navigation and interior) but there’s an inherent problem powering the devices. Electric power is at a premium when anchoring or sailing, and having dozens of parasitic loads at each fixture would be prohibitive. It would also have to be “fail safe” in that there would always need to be an easy way to manually turn things on and off. On my boat, most of the overhead lighting wires are inaccessible.
I’ve got some ideas, and one of these days I’ll set up HA on the boat. I’d be interested to read what others are doing.
I have a boat and now I installe Home Assistant. A boat is like a home but with more “stuff” that most houses don’t have (water maker, generator, macerator, osmosis filter, low voltage system, engine, alternator, and more)
So far (not in order of importance)
- smart plugs (I love them now in winter to preheat the cabins)
- smart lights (important when in a crowded bay finding your boat)
- logic for autostart of generator
- security camera
more to come, will edit this post
Home Assistant Integration for NMEA Instruments via WiFi/TCP
I have developed an integration for Home Assistant that enables the interfacing of NMEA instruments via WiFi or TCP. This is ideal for those utilizing Signalk or an NMEA WiFi 0183 Gateway, allowing for straightforward integration of your instruments with Home Assistant. Additionally, there is an integration for serial cable connections.

Integrating your NMEA instruments into Home Assistant unlocks the potential for advanced automations, alerts, and the creation of a comprehensive dashboard.
And an instruction video to go with it. https://youtu.be/VxIcNZlDbTI
I have over 30 videos on Smart Boat topics using Home Assistant. I also develop Boat specific Home Assistant Integrations. I have written NMEA 2000, NMEA 0183, Boat tracking and Smart Anchor Watch integrations
