Hey Everyone!
I was thinking of getting a small kitchen countertop hydroponic-type grower for basil and herbs. Is there a smart version where I can track water levels and whatever in Home Assistant?
Just checking. Thanks!

I was looking for the same thing. All I was able to do was add the switch to my smart hydroponics system. I just got this thing.

So I added it to SmartLife and got the local secret passcode. The on and off switch works, but I was trying to add in the sensors and other functions, like pump, fault data, low water alert, and other functions that it came with. I was not able to find anything on the Internet. Maybe eventually, I can built my own using Zigbee devices instead.
With a simple Zigbee light strip connected to ESP32, I can probably use the lights from the strip to mimic which type of lights I want. For fruits, you want warming lights. For veggies and herbs, you want a whiter light.
The unit I got is only $49, so I can get that, do not use the light part. Build my own light stand. Connect the motor to a smart plug directly, of course, I need to figure out the resistance needed for that motor, I should be able to control the motor and the lights.
Water levels, I can add a water leak detection and mount it on the side. If the water level goes below the max level, it will ping me to add more water. So, it is the opposite of detecting water leaks. I am not sure if a water leak detector and be constantly submerged under water. These are not expensive, so I will try.
On my calendar, I can remind myself to add more plant food.
I just bought this thing so I am looking forward to seeing what I can do with this when it grows my herbs. I want to get a second one for veggies and small fruits. First, I am going to test my green thumb on herbs first. If I get the hang of it, properly maintaining it and using what it produces, then I will try other things.
I think it is a good idea to buy a $49 unit because it comes with the pods, sponges are replaceable, it comes with the tank, and the motor. All I need to do is find a way to control it in HA by other means. If it all works out, I will share my experience. It will be a few months though.
Oh, I just thought about something. If I install a Zigbee control pump, I can pipe water to it using a valve. When it detects low water, it can refill itself until the water leak sensor detects water. I am going to play with this.
Any ideas anyone would be appreciated.
Add a wire to each of the probes on the bottom of the sensor & submerge the wires instead

Their electronics part (humidity control, water pump) may as well be working in an hydroponic setting. ESP32 powered
