Anyone know any solid outdoor recessed lighting (e.g. pot/puck lights), or smart bulbs for recessed lighting? I’ve looked a few times, haven’t found any good options.
My other option is presumably putting smart switches on traditional outdoor recessed lighting with traditional bulbs, which … is fine, I guess. I’m not opposed to that path, but if there are good options for smart fixtures or smart bulbs, that seems slightly simpler.
Lifx make a GU10 which will fit in standard fittings. There seem to be a lot of recessed fittings for GU10 available (I just did a google image search).
I use a bunch of GU10s indoors and they are very responsive, great brightness and colour. You may need to upgrade your wifi if using lots of them though. Most home routers have a client limit. See: Ubiquiti unifi APs.
I have 12v outdoor LED lighting that runs off a transformer plugged into a TP-Link HS-105 WiFi plug and I am very happy with it, rock stable. I don’t know that I would want lights independently connected via Z-Wave or Zigbee outdoors. Not sure of the advantage when you can just separate the lights into strings and use smart outlets. Also it opens up a huge variety of lighting available. I use the sun and time of day to control things, On at Sundown Off at 10pm On at 5am off at Sunrise type of thing but you can put anything you want into play.
I’m talking about recessed lighting like pot lights, along one side of the house to illuminate a walkway, so a smart plug wouldn’t be a great fit – the wiring will be inside the roof, so it would need to be smart bulbs or smart relays or whatever.
According to the Ubiqiti forums a practical limit to number of connected clients for their APs is about 40. However with low bandwidth devices like these bulbs you should be able to connect many more.
