Hi everyone.
I’m looking for a Type G (UK) smart plug that I can control using the home assistant iOS app when I’m out of the house. I don’t have or want an Alexa, Google Home, etc. Just the socket. Any recommendations?
I’m using TAPO P110 (which has energy monitoring). Work fine. I have been using TPLink for some years as well. TAPO is a TPLink brand and I think is the go forward brand.
If you are into Apple, apparently any Homekit device now works well via Bluetooth and gives you two options.
Being a masochist , I use older and more complex technologies :
-
Sonoff S26 using Wi-Fi, either with stock firmware + the Sonoff integration, or better still, flash with Tasmota and use MQTT for full local control.
-
IKEA Tradfri using Zigbee also work well for very little money, just don’t be tempted with the 1 or 5 button remotes (PITA, weird Zigbee additions, eat CR3032 daily). The Sonoff 3 USB Zigbee coordinator has a good reputation.
Shelly: No hub required, for remote control cloud based. Local operation no cloud needed. With Home Assistant no Shelly cloud needed to operate remote. Many options to automate on the device. Power metering on device. Schedules, sun etc. Very good Home Assistant integration. Auto discovery.
Shelly sadly not available in UK Type G format.
Here’s a link to the UK Shelly store - can you guess what product range is missing?

Spoiler: 13A BS1363 UK plug-in switches.
It’s a shame as the rest of the Shelly kit is rather good (although I’m a Tasmota die-hard).
I use Meross products. I have found them to be reliable and good value.
