Are you using groups? when you send a command to a group are all blinds moving at the same time? Do you have any lag between pressing the command on HA and the blind moving? (Sorry, its not clear to me). As for that last blind yuo mentioned, i’d contact smartwings, its definitely not normal behavior…
I am not using groups. They’re pretty newly installed so I’m adjusting them manually on a simple Home Assistant dashboard. Most of them respond in less than 1 second. Sometimes there’s ~1 second delay. I don’t know how they’re using the blinds to communicate with Home Assistant but it almost seems like the less time that’s passed since the last interaction, the faster it responds. I know the Zooz devices go to sleep but even then, they’re very responsive. I’ve ordered a signal booster (Zooz) because I can always use it later if signal isn’t the issue (I highly doubt it - it’s maybe 25 feet to the z-wave hub, although through probably 4 walls). If that doesn’t resolve, I’ll contact Smartwings as I’ve only had the shade for a couple of weeks. Thanks for the clarification above, that makes total sense.
Hi Tony,
Did you resolve your issue? I just installed some Smartwings z-wave flinds, and one of them keeps dropping off the network and disappearing from HA also using a Zooz 800 LR.
thanks,
Hey Steven,
I had a heck of a time with these roller shades. I’m new to HA and Z-wave and Smartwings so my learning curve has been steep. Ultimately, I broke things that I didn’t know how to fix when I switched from Z-wave JS to Z-wave JS UI. And because my integrations were obviously stored on my backups which I didn’t want to put back (as they’d again be Z-wave JS), I nuked my install and started from scratch. Z-wave JS UI is a whole new bag of fun. Eventually, I got all my things added again and here’s what I’ve learned about the Smartwings shades: they have a weak transmitter. My hub is on one side of my house and by the time I get to the middle of the house, I was getting sporadic operation. In my bedroom on the opposite side, I couldn’t even get the shades to complete inclusion most of the time. I have a Zooz motion detector that isn’t connected to power (ZSE18) and it’s not only in my bedroom but behind an additional closet door, and it has no problems communicating. So, I bought a Zooz ZAC38 range extender and put the problematic Smarwings shades in mesh mode instead of Z-wave LR. Not ideal, since LR is more straightforward, but it works now and is still snappy. Mind you, my house is not gigantic. I measured 35 feet from the hub to the first shade that was dropping off the network. It’s not line of site and there are multiple walls in the way but this seems pretty pathetic for a protocol that’s supposed to go over a mile (on paper) and 3000 feet realistically LOS. I’ve finished my upstairs shades and would take a hard look at another manufacturer if I had more to do. I’m not disgusted with Smartwings but I do have some concerns and their documentation is lacking IMHO. Hope you get yours working! I made a ton of mistakes so if you have a specific issue, I may have seen it. Took me a week to get HA and integrations back up and working properly but I cheated and have way more shades than supported remotes so I had a lot of jumping around to do (force shades to sleep to prevent resetting the wrong ones).
It sounds like your blinds and Z-Wave setup are working properly, but the lag you’re seeing comes from how Home Assistant handles Z-Wave commands. Unlike Zigbee, Z-Wave sends commands one by one instead of broadcasting them, which causes blinds in the same room to move slightly out of sync. You can improve this by updating the firmware on your blinds and Zooz 800LR dongle, adding a few powered Z-Wave devices nearby to strengthen the mesh, and using automations with a small delay between each blind’s command. It’s also worth checking the Z-Wave logs in Home Assistant to see if there are retry or delay issues. Upgrading to Matter motors might help a bit, but won’t completely remove the lag. If you want a smoother, fully integrated setup, Accent Window Blinds & Shades can help you design a smart shade system that syncs perfectly with your existing home automation.
Hi Jim - I’ve been able to get the blinds synced using a bond bridge instead of the direct zwave… unfortunately the smartwings dont have any update available, and my zooz is already updated…
Anyways, I have some issues with another room (bedroom) I didnt put smartwings in, and the apartment is in Sunny Isles, so not too far from you… I’ll give you a call when i’m in town to chat…
That said, its normally in good form to disclose your relationship with a company you recommend ![]()
If you dont mind, send me a message on here with the best number to reach you, I’ll be away for a few months still but when i’m back I’ll give you a ring
