Smoke detector with Matter-over-thread support

Is anyone aware of Matter (thread) smoke alarms available on the market?

The only thing I have found is this:

But this seems more like an announcement, it doesn’t seem to be available yet.

I usually check this list, which seems pretty up to date, but don’t see anything yet. You can also search the CSA’s Matter certification database, but those products aren’t necessarily shipping yet.

In addition to the Heiman announcement, I searched for the Siterwell part number and again found nothing but press releases. The Nordic semi (HooRii) product is just a module for manufacturers to use and I couldn’t find anything using it. It might be a while still.

That said, my personal recommendation is to think twice about smart smoke detectors. Since availability is limited, there may not be a model that meets all your local regulatory requirements. Also I’m reading posts every day about flaky Thread devices, so I’m not convinced it’s trustworthy enough for life-saving alarms yet. I made my dumb interconnected (wired) detectors “smart” by hooking the manufacturer’s relay device to a z-wave sensor which alerts me when any alarm goes off. It’s not critical to operations, but nice to have if there’s an issue when I’m away.

Hi Peter,
Thank you for your feedback.
I guess we’ll have to wait some more.

And I agree, whatever smoke detector you buy should be compliant with local regulations. About Thread-issues: I don’t experience them personally, but I can imagine that a smoke detector that is just being released could have some of those issues, indeed.

There seems to be a Matter smoke detector available from this German site:

I think I’m going to wait. I wanted to buy just one to try, but the delivery costs (14€) are quite high.

Agreed that we should not rely on smarthome devices for life-saving purposes, but ‘smart’ smoke alarms make an alarm locally, with smart-information and notifications sent as a secondary action. I have 9 smart smoke alarms and perhaps the biggest ‘smart’ benefits are seeing battery level and finding the one that is chirping in the night because I forgot to look at a smart-app to see what the battery level was before it ran too low!

Sensereo MS-1 is now on the market Top-Performing Matter Thread Smoke Detector - Sensereo

Note it appears only to send statuses, not receive commands. For example you cannot command it to test, hush an ongoing alarm, or trigger the siren to go based on other sensors. Aqara’s non-thread smoke alarm Smoke Detector - Aqara supports interconnection and muting, but I also don’t see those functions mentioned in the Matter spec Supported Device Types - Matter, so I’m not sure what to make of it.

Also note it only has EU+CE certifications, not UL 278 for residential USA where jurisdictions legally require that.

I see more listed at Certified Products Search | IOT - CSA-IOT, but can’t actually find any of them for sale in the USA besides the Sensereo.

I do not see any matter+thread smoke+CO alarms out yet, although there’s a chip for it that came out in September 2024 so it seems like it’d have to be in consumer devices by the end of this year or next. Thanks for the update, Micah.

In Europe, also this smoke detector recently became available:

I don’t have any experience with it, so I can’t say it’s a better option than the Sensereo. It looks better, though.

I just read your message right now.
Yes, there are now Matter‑over‑Thread fire alarms available. The Sensereo MS‑1 is a photoelectric smoke detector that uses Matter over Thread for fast, efficient, and secure integration with Apple HomeKit, SmartThings, and other ecosystems Another option is the HEIMAN Smart Smoke Sensor (HS1SA‑M), a compact Matter‑over‑Thread smoke alarm compatible with standards like DIN EN14604 and offering reliable notifications via smart home platforms

I bought a Heiman smoke alarm with Matter support and integrated it into Home Assistant with no problems, but when I press the Test button on the device (or use the self-test button in HA), it doesn’t change the Smoke sensor. It just says “clear” all the time.

Any ideas? I sent an email to Heiman support but don’t have much hope they’ll be helpful.

There was a firmware update that I installed, but it didn’t help.

I got the Sensereo MS-1, with two MSC-1 arriving in a few days.

Setup was easy with Matter as usual. The plugs for the screws were square instead of round. So needed a bigger bit to drill.

Showing the following entities in HA. Sensitivity was set on low by default.

Having the same issue as mennzo, pressing ‘Self-test’ in HA did nothing.
As well as manually pressing the button.
Have reached out to Sensereo

Not sure what happened but after a day the self-test status started to reflect in HA.

Some additional information from Sensereo support on why the MS-1 doesn’t make a sound when doing self-test through Home Assistant

What you are seeing is expected behavior. MS-1 is our earlier generation product, and that version does not support remote self-test playback through Home Assistant. That is why the self-test in HA may show the status change, but you do not hear the buzzer sound from the device.

MSC-1 is a newer generation and it does support remote self-test, so you will hear the sound during self-test and you may also see the “Muted” entity behave differently.

For MS-1, the audible self-test is only supported via the physical button on the device. The “Muted” entity shown in Home Assistant is not intended as a user control switch for MS-1 in this scenario, which is why you cannot find a way to toggle it off in HA or in the manual.
