Solution to capture athlete data on the track

Hi there,

What I’m thinking about is a solution to capture athlete data when they run on the track. I’m wondering if it would be possible to use wireless sensors that count each time an athlete passes the sensor, having a unique sensor in their shoe. The wireless sensors should submit their data to a pi, where a calculation is made the distance the athlete ran in 6 minutes (or maybe any other time limit you could define). Ideally it should record for each athlete this distance. Further desired would be that the sensor also contains a coloured light that you can switch on or off. This could serve as point of recognition and maybe could serve as pace setting for the athlete by sequentially lighting up in front of the athlete.

Do you think this would be feasible, has someone already invented a similar thing, where can I get these wireless sensors and can I get a light in it? And any other tips or recommendations would be welcome.

Thanks,
Hans
