You can also press the button for 1 second to wake up the device and make it accept reporting interval changes. I read elsewhere one might need to press the button again after hass says it sent the message, supposedly to acknowledge the change.

Brilliant - this worked for me!
if you press one time on the pairing button (not 3s to repair) then the sensor will accept new configs.

Oh man, been looking for this solution for a long time. Almost threw this sensor in the bin.
I spent quite awhile on this, for anyone that gets timeouts trying to apply the reporting interval. First restart z2m or zha, after that try and update the reporting interval, press the device wake button just after sending the request from home assistant to apply the reporting interval. Hope this saves someone some time.
Dont need to enable permit join just click on the button on the sensor. Thank you
