Squid Proxy for Home Assistant

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share a custom add-on I’ve been working on lately. I really needed a secure proxy to run on HA and for the love of god, I couldn’t find any. So here it is:

A dedicated Squid Proxy server add-on for Home Assistant.

And: I spent quite a bit of time hardening this one to be as “stealthy” as possible.

What makes it different? The main goal was to create a proxy that stays transparent. It automatically strips headers like

Via

and

X-Forwarded-For

and mimics modern browser behavior. I’ve also built in a real-time dashboard accessible directly through the Home Assistant Sidebar (via Ingress) so you can see your active connections and protocol splits (HTTP vs HTTPS) as they happen, can handle LetsEncrypt and falls back to self-signed automatically, etc. No technical skills needed, everythiig should work simply from config.

How to try it out: You can add my repository to your Add-on Store:

https://github.com/Nwus9XWK5UTy/homeassistant

Once you add the repo, you’ll see “Squid Proxy” in your list.

I’d love your feedback: This is currently at version 1.0.3, and I’m looking to refine it further. I’m particularly interested to know:

  1. Does the AppArmor profile play nice with your specific installation (especially if you’re on a supervised install or a NAS)?
  2. Currently only built for aarch64. Any other platforms?
  3. Is the live dashboard useful, or are there other metrics you’d like to see visualized?
