Most setups go for 2-3 motion sensors under the hand rail to segment the sections from what I have seen for projects like this to make it work. Make sure its a sensor that you can keep plugged into power so that you don’t have worry about swapping batteries once you have set them up else look into battery eliminators for the ones you go for.
