Hello Everyone,
I’d like to share a project that i’m working on recently. I called it Stewart and (as you probably figured out from the title already) lets you write automations using PHP.
How i got here
Previously used Noed-RED as my automation engine from the early days i use Home Assistant (6 years so far), because i never liked to write and store automations and complex logic in YAML.
Node-RED worked flawlessly, but as automations get more complex it gets really hard to pick-up something that you didn’t touched for years, despite how good your node naming is.
So i started looking around and found AppDaemon and NetDaemon, and ported a few of my automations to C# using NetDaemon, and really liked the concept to write simple code instead of drag-and-dropping nodes that hides the logic.
How it started
After that i needed to realize that main expertise is with PHP not with C#, and to be a good programmer you need more than understand the language, you need to have experience with the whole ecosystem that conencted to it, so this is how Stewart started.
Stewart began as a on-day proejct, i wanted to get more hands on with async programming with PHP and this two things just fit together, then quickly created a concept that worked and looked stable. So i kept going and switched to an agentic developement workflow to speed up development a lot and this is the result that i feel its now worth publishing.
Stewart has been running a few of my automations for almost a week now, and im going to port more-and more as i have time.
Where to find it
- Docs: Home Assistant automations in PHP | Stewart
- GitHub: GitHub - stewart-php/stewart: Stewart main repository · GitHub
Its a fresh 1.0 release so expect some rough edges. If you have any feedback, idea or bug report, post it to github (projects and issues is not fully set-up yet, its coming soon).
And if anyone is crazy enough to want their automations in PHP, I’d love to hear about it.
Zolli.
