I have a video that I would like to stream to my roku (or smart tv), then once the video finishes, go back to what the roku was previously on. I have the video in my local media currently, but it’s not streaming to my roku. I use the UI interface of home assistant but I know how to edit .yaml files.
i am doing something similar with my cameras
Found that the 4K camera output resolution did not work for this. Dont know why.
704x480 and 1920x1080 from camera converted to 1280x720 by ffmpeg was OK but tried converting 4k to 1920x1080 and it failed
So is it possible to send camera feeds to the roku via homeassistant? I’ve followed a couple of examples and can’t seem to make it work.
Using development tools, I am doing “Camera: Play Stream” action, selecting one of my cameras as target, and selecting the roku as the media player to stream the camera to.
On the roku tv I can see it gets the command, it tries to do “something” but then goes back to the screen it was on.
I did a bit more testing, trying to stream anything to the roki via homeassistant, like mp3 files I have, etc., and I get same result, the roku “tries” to do something but then goes back to the screen it was on.
Any ideas on how to get it to work?
Only what’s above
I remember sending video and likely I used the cast feature but this was long ago and I have since moved on.
I never actually liked this idea and only expected to use this to watch for as know visitor arriving so I could monitor cameras. It was slow and acts similar to switching streaming services so it your gonna quick pause >>view camera >>unpause and back to show. Any implementations of this is terrible and HA is in the phone sitting next to me
After replying here I found a newer post, and seems it was pretty easy to do but Roku decided to block it for “security reasons”. I was getting the “play on roku” on the screen, but I would then get kicked out shortly after. Figured it was something wrong with my setup, but turns out Roku disabled the feature.
Now, the other issues you mentioned. I was looking for a way to set up an automation so it would show the feed when someone arrives on tvs that were “on” but with chromecast it seems it would be more annoying than anything.
Yup. That was my thoughts.
I could only imagine being into a TV show when suddenly it switches, very slowly, to my cameras to alert me of something I care less about. I then spend time switch back, searching for show I was watching and starting it only for a false bleary to switch it back to cams. I never thought this was practical but occasionally I want to see my kids in pool (camera) and it would be handy.
So. Old school Home theatre you connect a AV receiver.
HDMI out to TV from AV receiver
multiple video inputs to AV receiver can be switched quickly and easily to TV
My actually thought if I ever cared was to connect a second source to my AV Receiver and switch this. I use onkyo receivers and the HA integration makes this easy. Matter fact I may do this today now you got me thinking about it.
RasPi that auto loads frigate birdseye page on boot connected to AV Receiver
I think Roku allows messages but if not I can always send actionable notification to phone and allow “show on TV” as an option or just jump to HA page with buttons that put camera on TV.
If AV receiver isn’t possible you can also just switch TV input using the TV integration or CEC integration.
With my setup my false alarms on camera feeds are very very low. The issue I have with getting notifications via HA app or even Whatsapp is that it requires unlocking the phone. For example often I am in the kicthchen with wet hands, so it is a pain in the rear to unlock the phone then open the right app to see the feed.
I live in a gated community so my front door doesn’t worry me much, but our back fence leads to a vacant lot (a huge one). Back when we got the house 8 years ago, they had construction workers back there, and my house (we were renting it) got broken in 3 times, and pretty much all neighbors that share same back wall fence were broken in at least once. Eventually construction concluded, construction workers were gone, and they locked up the vacant lot.
However within the next couple of months they will start work on a main road that will run behind our house where the vacant lot is right now. That means there will construction workers back there so the break ins will start again. That is why having HA push live feed to TVs that were on seemed like a good idea
I get notification snapshot with image on my phone.
I dont need to unlock to see snapshot.
It include action to open gate
Can do all without unlock
A second video source to TV should work well and may also be pretty fast(display within 3 seconds of event)
You get the snapshot via HA app? I haven’t played with getting notifications via the app, but if I can see without unlocking, and even click on an action, that right there might give me enough reason to play with it, and get my other half to want to use it.
