Is there a way to stream an audio feed to an audio only google assistant device (I’m specifically interested in a google home and google home mini).
Ideally the audio feed from an ip camera would work. I haven’t bought any hardware yet as I may just go with a cheap audio monitor and speaker if this isn’t possible.
I’d like to be able to monitor our baby monitor from any of the rooms that have a google home in them.
Essentially this is like saying “show camera 1” on a google home hub, but audio only.
Home Assistant is fully capable of this, but it’s usually pretty difficult to get reliable audio feeds from most surveillance cameras. The newer stream component helps allot with this, but there’s a fairly substantial delay that tends to increase the longer you’re streaming – often up to several minutes.
In a basic (eg: discovery) configuration, ‘smart’ Google devices aren’t differentiated from any other Google ‘receivers’. HA simply casts the entire stream – audio and video – to the Home Mini (or Home Hub) exactly the same way it casts to a ‘dumb’ Chromecast. Of course the Mini can’t display the video so the result is the same as casting, for instance, a YouTube video to the Home Mini; only the audio is played.
For a smart Google device to be able to communicate to HA requires configuring a separate Google Assistant component.
Thank you for elaborating, I suspected it would work but wasn’t sure. I think I’ll setup a test using the IP Camera app on an old android phone and see how bad the latency gets.
