I am looking for a notification service. As there are so many it is tricky to find which would be best, so thought I would ask.
Specifically I would like a notifier that:
Messages can be sent to my phone or my wife’s
Doesn’t require HA being accessible via the internet
HA can receive and respond to my replies to notifications
Doesn’t require installing a new app (if possible)
Google hangouts seems like it might work (as it is pre-installed on our phones), but does require a fairly complicated setup. Is there anything others I should consider?
HA will have access to the internet. Just I don’t want to be able to access HA from the internet, so no remote login or dns service etc (due to security concerns).
Hi. Google Hangouts really works whithout internet acces. Just now I close the port and all works.
I use it like notification servise and conversation bot. Post states messages, turn on air conditioner and lights, etc.
Integration realy easy. Registry new google account for Home assistant. Integrate it. Text from new account “Hi” to youself, wife, kids… At HA find “hangouts.conversations” entity, copy conversation ID and configure what you want.
I made a separate gmail account just for notifications, from HA and my camera PC.
That way I don’t have to worry about using my primary email, and my primary has dual factor authentication, which makes it incompatible with this.
You can send an email to tmobile, att, etc. and they will convert the email to a text.
So I get a text if the garage door is left open too long.
