Synology DS-409 fails to be configured

I have just started setting up Home Assistant for the first time (bear with me). I have made a successful installation on a Raspberry Pi 3B, and everything runs well. I found that HA discovered far more devices by itself than I expected. So, so far so good.

HA also discovered my Synology DS-409 NAS. Yes, it is an older type with DSM 4.2-3259 and it can’t be upgraded anymore.

Issue
After I click ‘configure’ HA ask me to put in Username, Password, Port and to check for SSL-certificate and verification of SSL-certificate. I have used my login credentials of my admin (with admin rights) account, I have tried both port 5000 and 50001, and I have tried all combinations with the check boxes for SSL/verification. In DSM Firewall settings I have added HTTP/S for ports5000 & 5001.

Results

  • If I keep the SSL checkbox marked, nothing happens.
  • If I have a mark in this checkbox, I get an error message: ‘Unexpected error’ (without explanation.

Question

  • What am I doing wrong?
  • Any advise is welcome!

=====

Is the DS-409 so obsolete that it is only running compromised SSL/TLS protocols and ciphers? (I assume it is 15 years old, from 2009.)

Modern operating systems have removed support for those ancient protocols/ciphers, for obvious reasons…

Older versions may not be supported as Synology integration page states “DSM 5.x and higher”
