Tablet for camera stream

Hi,

Looking for recommendations for a tablet to stream stream: my Reolink cameras to. We use one of the cameras as a baby monitor so need to be able to have the stream running overnight next to our bed. At the moment my dash displays perfectly on our phones but we want a dedicated tablet for the job. I tried with an old iPad 4 and guided access ‘kiosk mode’, but it’s very unreliable due to its ages. The HA app does not work and using Safari works 1 times out of 10, it mostly hangs when it tries to load. When it does work, the stream does play perfectly.

Would something like a Fire 7 be up for the job, or do I need something more powerful?

I have two Fire HD 8 tablets and can’t show video streams of my survaillance cameras for too long (say for more than two hours or so). Either the video streams hangs at some point, or the tablet suddenly uses more power from the battery than it recharges with is obviously not sustainable for too long.

I use Fully Kiosk to display Home Assistant. For things like my doorbell I display the video stream for a couple of minutes and then close the popup automatically again.

I think you might need an app specifically designed for security cameras and view the stream directly, shortcutting the HA. That would be my option, but you need access to the video stream and it will probably only work on the local network.

Have you tried configuring go2rtc and running that? I have it streaming 8 camera streams pretty sweet on my fairly average tablet. I also downsampled the stream as I don’t need 4k being streamed to a tablet that at full resolution can only stream a fraction of that.
