Has anyone had success with a wall mount tablet with completely hidden cables?
I’d like to put something on the wall (at least 10"), but really, really don’t want to see any exposed cables of any kind.
I was wondering if anyone had any success with any tablet model removing the rear panel and rerouting/soldering something to the board that could be routed out the back and into the wall without an exposed cable out of the factory USB port. The back doesn’t have to be pretty, as it would sit against the wall.
I was thinking of making a frame with a right angle connector concealed in it. The frame would be open on the opposite side to the connector to allow the tablet to slide in/out.
However I have decided I don’t actually need a wall mounted tablet so never progressed to actually making it.
Having watched a couple of YouTube teardown videos, I am thinking something like a Lenovo M10 (A couple going cheap on Facebook Marketplace around me), removing the back cover, taking out the battery and then removing the USB socket from the case and re-routing it back through a hole in the back of the case.
Appear some tablets work fine with no battery installed, others may need a capacitor soldered in to trick the tablet into thinking a battery is there,
I have used the 10 inch Raspberry pi touchscreen in my last house - Element14 - 10 Inch Touchscreen with an Odroid SBC but you could use any single board computer. Could even use whatever is running your home assistant as long as it has HDMI output. All cabling is done from the back and I glued a few strong magnets on the monitor and in the wall to hold it in the wall cavity.
For mine I use right angled connectors to the tablet. For lightning there’s only one vendor on Amazon that I found that has them but they work very well in hiding that charge cable.
Not really many options out there with Qi charging. But I also don’t want to have to regulate battery/change discharge or leave it permanently charging, so whatever happens I will likely open it up and remove the battery.
I am buying a second hand Lenovo Tab M2 (2nd Gen), which did originally sell with an optional dock and has two small contacts on the bottom edge which take 5V, so I may utilize those, either by soldering some small wires that are not visible as it will be along the bottom edge, so soldering some new wires directly to the connector inside the case and routing them out the back when I take out the battery.
Thanks for the suggestions of thin/right angle connectors, but that was what I wanted to avoid. even the smallest ones are already quite obvious, and call me fussy but I really can’t stand the look - it’s just unclean.
I have the same tablet and looking for USB connections. But what you describe sounds good to me as well. Did you manage to wire some cables and disconnect the battery easily? Any stuff I need to take care off?
Sorry for the very slow reply here. It was pretty straightforward to remove the battery, and I just soldered a new cable directly onto the battery controller where the battery itself was connected. Drilled a hole in the back of the case to route the cable out the back.
